A dishwasher is one of the few machines in the house that works behind a closed door in a room where you're often standing — which makes it the appliance people listen to most. Good news: its sounds sort into a fairly honest vocabulary. Here's how we translate them on service calls around the Portland metro.
Grinding or rattling mid-cycle: something hard is in the works
Most dishwashers built in the last two decades have a small food chopper or a filter assembly ahead of the pump. A hard grind usually means glass, a fruit pit, a popcorn kernel or a shard of ceramic is riding the chopper blade. Caught early it's a cleaning job; ignored for weeks it chews the impeller and turns a free fix into a pump replacement. Kill the cycle, check the sump area under the lower arm, and pull out anything that glitters.
A single loud thump when the machine starts filling: water hammer
That bang isn't the dishwasher — it's your pipes reacting to the inlet valve snapping open or shut. Portland's older housing stock, with its long galvanized or early-copper runs, is especially good at amplifying it. The dishwasher-side fix is a fresh inlet valve that closes smoothly; the house-side fix is a hammer arrestor on the supply. If the thump appeared recently, the valve is aging — and a valve that bangs today often weeps tomorrow.
Buzzing at the start or end of the cycle: the drain pump speaking
A short businesslike buzz during drain is normal. A strained, angry buzz that ends with water still in the tub means the drain pump is fighting a blockage — or losing its bearings. Check the air gap and the drain hose loop under the sink first; if those are clear and the buzz persists, the pump has earned a professional listen.
Squealing or whining during the wash: circulation motor bearings
A thin squeal that rises and falls with the spray arms points at the circulation pump motor. On our soft Bull Run water the culprit is almost never mineral scale — it's plain mechanical wear, and it decides the repair-or-replace question honestly: on a mid-age machine a circulation pump is worth doing; on a unit pushing fifteen years we'll tell you the math straight.
Clicks, gurgles and swishes: mostly innocent
Relay clicks at cycle changes, a gurgle at the end of drain, the rhythmic swish of the arms — that's the machine doing its job. The sound to respect is the new sound: any noise your kitchen didn't make last month is data, and the earlier we hear about it, the smaller the invoice tends to be.
When to stop running it
Grinding with visible debris you can't reach, any burning smell, or buzzing with standing water — park the machine and call. Everything else can usually wait for a scheduled visit, where a fixed quote follows a meter-and-ears diagnosis, and most fixes ride home from the van the same day.
