Ask the internet "gas or electric dryer" and you'll get purchase-price and utility-rate math. Ask a repair bench and you get a different, useful angle: what does each one break, how often, and what does the fix cost? What electric dryers break

The heating element is the career failure: a coil that snaps after years of expansion cycles — affordable part, straightforward labor. Around it orbit the thermal fuse and thermostats (cheap, usually the vent's fault, not the part's), and the universal mechanicals: belts, idler pulleys, drum rollers, door switches. Electric dryers are beautifully boring to repair, which is a compliment. What gas dryers break

Gas machines add a combustion path that wants occasional professional eyes (burner tube, flame color, venting), but their parts bench is just as friendly as electric — the myth that "gas is expensive to fix" doesn't survive contact with the invoice history. The genuine caveats: any work touching the gas valve or line belongs to a professional, full stop, and installation flexibility is lower (you need the gas stub).

Most of what fails on any dryer doesn't care about fuel: belts, rollers, pulleys, blowers, door switches, moisture sensors, control boards — and above all the vent restriction our damp climate cultivates, which stresses both kinds equally and causes most of the "heat" failures on each. Whichever you own, the airflow habit matters more than the fuel choice.

The bench verdict

Lifespan and total repair spend run remarkably close. Electric wins on install simplicity and DIY-friendliness of its common faults; gas wins on operating cost per load in most local rate environments and dries a touch faster; both are long-haul appliances when the vent stays clear.
